Where the hell is Matt.

Posted by dugie on June 23rd, 2008

Long Zheng, just twittered this video clip, called “Where the hell is Matt”.  Go watch, I know I’ve been under a rock for a little while,  but this clip is a decidedly beautiful little video.  (I have no idea how I could have missed it?!)

If you have time, I recommend going to check it out:  Where the Hell is Matt (2008) on Vimeo

My Blogging Mojo

Posted by dugie on May 22nd, 2008

Yeah Baby, found my bloggin mojo - Image creditYeah ok, you lot.  So I’m back blogging on a regular basis - and you lot return the love, by poking fun at me.  *chuckles*  Figures, serves me right!  =)

Anyway, I’ve decided I’m going to blog all those little [virtualization] questions.  The ones that I get asked every day about interop with Windows in Virtual Machines.  The type of questions, that you often assume, that everybody knows (like Ctrl+C with a messagebox, or F7 at the command prompt)

So sit back, relax, and enjoy all the snippets the follow.

Cleaning up the Scotch Collection

Posted by dugie on May 18th, 2008

Ahhh, Scotch.  If you’ve spent any time on my blog, you’ll know just how much I enjoy a “wee dram“.   Each year I go through and clean out all the bottles that I’ve kept (and enjoyed) from the year before.  The scotch itself I may not necessarily have enjoyed, but I will have enjoyed it in the company of good friends - so it gets added to the shelf.

Well, I’ve cleaned out the shelf, and here they are (duplicates removed):

  • Dalwhinnie 15
  • Johnnie Walker 12Scotches I've enjoyed.
  • Johnnie Walker Green 15
  • Johnnie Walker Blue
  • Glenlivet 12
  • Glenfiddich 12
  • Glenfiddich 15
  • Glenfiddich 18
  • Glenfiddich 21
  • Glenmorangie 10
  • Glenmorangie 18
  • GlenDronach 12
  • Talisker 10
  • Ardbeg 10
  • Glenwood
  • Cardhu
  • Suntory - MattO has this bottle
  • Laphroaig - went camping never made it back

Here’s “bottom’s up” to the year ahead!

Bikes, Sat nav, and upcoming road trips

Posted by dugie on May 18th, 2008

I have the itch for another road trip on the bike, and those on MSN or Twitter have probably picked up on this :)

On the way to Cameron Corner, Bulloo Development road. This year I plan to jump on a bike head, and ride into the great outback – off to a place called Cameron Corner (check the trip in Google Maps). The idea of riding to the single point in Australia that joins Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales has always appealed to me. …more so after watching “The Long Way Down” on DVD.

I’ve bought myself a Sat Nav, the Tom Tom Rider and I’ve been really impressed with it.  I’m in the process of playing interop with my camera, blog, and phone.  It’s going pretty well.

So I guess the next step is a new bike. I thought I wanted to upgrade my trusty TransAlp to the latest model, but finding somewhere to do that is just a little to hard at the moment.  So for a while now I’ve been struggling with the decision between the Ducati Multistrada, the BMW GS or the Triumph Tiger.  Oh the decisions you have to make in life =)

Anyway, so whilst I decide on which bike I get, I’ll leave you with this funny youtube clip, sent to me by a mate:  Got the wrong Bike.

I have a new role with VMware

Posted by dugie on February 14th, 2008

I started my new role as a Territory SE with VMware this month.  It’s really awesome stuff, and unlike anything I could have imagined.  The team here is so full of energy and passion, and the place is a beehive of activity!   Oh you should see the kitchen, it’s amazing and full of goodies!

…and that’s probably why a couple of avid readers have pinged me asking about the sudden lack of regular blogging.  Well guys, just for you I’ve stayed up extra late tonight to jam out a quick post.  I had planned to do this earlier but time has got away from me when I wasn’t looking.  So this is coming to you live and uncut - ignore the typos.   :)

Now I guess the burning question on everybody’s lips, is “What about the blog?

Well I’ve haven’t come up with an answer yet.  I’ve given it some thought, and the blog is WindowsVirtualization.  Over time I have enjoyed blogged about all sorts of things [I've found interesting] that involve Windows Virtualization:  Windows as a Guest or a Host, Window Interop, Tools, Findings, Experiences, Vendors, Support, and the occasional bit of coolness too.

So I’m thinking maybe I continue more along those lines?  Focus more on support policies, best practices, standards, or maybe just experiences from others in the field?  Rest assured guys, whatever I do, I’ll keep it real and maintain that same ’signal:noise ratio’, you’ve come to love and expect.   =)

Anyway that brings me to now, and perhaps my very next blog post.  I’m seeing a huge amount of interest from customers around Virtualization at the Desktop (VDI).  Since I haven’t blogged VDI in a while, I think I’ll start there!

So tell me, what would you like to see?  Leave comments and let me know.

Australia Day 2008

Posted by dugie on January 25th, 2008

Yes I’ve been hiding under a rock, but I’m alive and well.  And tomorrow I’ll be doing even better, because it’s Australia Day!    …and probably my all time favouritest holiday of the year.

It’s hard to mess with perfection, so I’ll just repost-my-post from last year; which was the same as the year before :)

It’s Australia Day here in Oz, and the rest-of-the world wonder with sometimes morbid fascination on our ability to celebrate our National Holiday with a good old BBQ (and might I add I do a pretty good BBQ Brunch)

So What is Australia Day?  Well, a perfect Wiki definition is “Australia Day is Australia’s official national day, January 26. It commemorates the landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove on that day in 1788.”

Personally, I reckon the end of Sam Kekovich’s controversial commercial Buy Lamb for Australia Day says it nicely:  Whack on the BBQ, invite everyone over — if you can’t pronounce their name, just call them “mate” –; and celebrate living in the best bloody country on Earth.

A good old Aussie fry up - the steaks had already been eaten!

Havagoodaustraliadayeveryone, I’ll be celebrating, kicking it by the Pool, chillin near the BBQ, and enjoying the company of friends!

BTW:  MikeFitz, if you’re reading this - we make it in the top 5 google hits for "australia day bbq"

Can I upgrade the My Book Premium ES Edition?

Posted by dugie on January 10th, 2008

Yes you can, and it’s awesome.  It took about 10 minutes, and about 10 screws.  But why would you?  Well I’m glad you asked!

I robocopy all my DVD’s up to a couple of Western Digital My Books.  That way all my DVDs are at my fingertips, and it stops my little man from putting vegemite toast in the DVD drive of the Media Centre :)

The My Book upgraded from 500gb to 750gbBut Christmas Santa gave me quite a few DVDs.  So it’s time to copy them up, but I’m out of space.  So I bought a couple of WD 750 SATA disks on special.  $200 AUD each, a bargain!

The upgrade was quite painless:  popped of the chassis of the My Book, removed the cage screws, removed the drive screws, one screw out of the PCB.

Then I just popped in the new drive, put it all back together, plugged it back in and Voilla!  The My Book is now 250Gb larger.  I’m just copying over all the content from the old disk now.  ….23 minutes remaining.

My Challenges, Goals and Resolutions for 2007 - UPDATE 98%

Posted by dugie on December 22nd, 2007

It’s now the week of Christmas, and the year is nearly at an end.  With that it’s time to post my final update for the year.

Calvin and Hobbes on resolutions.I won’t recap the full story for the year, instead you can read those occasional updates at your leisure.  =)

So in short, I’m well pleased with the changes I’ve made and everything I’ve accomplished this year.  At times it was a struggle.  …but I managed to read more books, get out more on weekends, meet lots of exciting and interesting people, as well as get a deeper understanding of all things virtualization in and out of the data center.

So what’s planned for next year?  Well I have some ideas, but I’m not sure yet.  That’s why I’m in the middle of packing my gearsack for one last bike ride for the year.  Personally, I find all the best ideas come to me when I’m on the bike, enjoying a twitsy backroad on a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

See you all in a couple of days when I get back.
