Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 using SAN attached storage with Emulex

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

I was looking for some information on something else, and I came across an interesting product from Emulex.

Emulex have released a product called VMPilot, that enables SAN Connectivity for Microsoft Virtual Server.  You can download their 4 page whitepaper and a snippet is below:

VMPilot uses a simple wizard that allows IT managers to quickly create VMs with Virtual HBA ports (VPorts) that are based on ANSI standard N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) technology. NPIV1 is implemented in Emulex LightPulse Virtual HBA technology and in Fibre Channel switches that are generally available from Brocade, Cisco, and McDATA. Each VPort has a unique WWPN identity on the SAN that works just like a physical HBA port. This provides the benefits of SAN best practices and standard SAN management applications at the VM level, fully enabling SAN storage for applications running on Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. The result is that VMPilot allows users of Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 to take full advantage of the capabilities of SAN-attached storage.

The whitepaper is pretty good, but I found myself reading the FAQ to answer the burning questions:  VMPilot does not need to install Emulex drivers in a VM, and the prerequisites to install:

  • Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2
  • Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SP2
  • Microsoft Storport driver update KB 916048 or later
  • Emulex Storport Miniport driver version 1.30a7
  • Emulex firmware version 2.70a5

Anyone out there using this?  If so please leave comments.

Chatting about Viridian, Carmine, Virtualization and Longhorn gossip - Part I

Posted by admin on March 29th, 2007

I thought I’d post some Viridian, Carmine and Longhorn gossip.  Well it’s not’s really gossip, but more like conversation starters.  …I’m struggling for the right words here, but it’s 10:30am and I haven’t had a coffee, so I’m going to need you to give me a little slack.  :)

Anyway, in the past two weeks, between assorted breakfasts, planning sessions, usergroups and emails.  I’ve spoken to over a hundred people about a variety of virtualization topics (like I said, it’s been busy).  During this time I’ve noticed two distinct groups of people:

  1. We’ve looked at the idea virtualization, but now we want to take our first steps, and we want them to be firm, hardy steps.  … and
  2. We have been using virtualization for a little while, we are pretty comfortable with it, and now we want to push the envelope.

Sure there is a few people in between, but not too many .  So naturally I start chatting with all these interesting people, and this is where I’m finding the picture gets (just a little) blurry.  Not from any mind altering substance, but more from the mixed interpretations and resources out on there on the intarweb.

Not that I can boast to be any sort of authority on this, but I promised these wonderful people I’d jam together a blog post with some of the resources I knew of, and hopefully make life a bit easier for them.  If you’re reading this an you’re not one of those people, this post is going to be weirder than normal :)

Release Dates
We’ll I’ve no idea where the story originated, but there seems to be a widespread believe that we won’t see Viridian or Carmine until the end of 2008, and it won’t be publicly available till the beginning of 2009.  I’m not sure where the dates came from, but obviously somewhere because quite a few folk had that impression.  But keep reading cause, I think I figured out why…

Carmine
Firstly, Carmine is the code name for System Centre Virtual Machine Manager, also known as SCVMM.  I’m just going to call it Carmine.
Carmine Beta 2 was announced at the Management Summit,  and we’ve been told we’ll see a download within 45 days (that works out to be on or about Friday 11 May)

Yeah I know the Beta 1 announcement was May last year.  I guess most people still have in their heads it takes forever to get from Beta 2 to RTM (I think it was 5 months for XP, and about 18 months for Vista).  All of a sudden it seems akin to all those jokes about giving birth to a baby elephants (22 months).   *groan*

Personally, Beta 2 just can’t get here soon enough for me.  Virtual Server really needs some solid management tools and nice new features such as V2V
, P2V, and Virtualization Candidates Recognition.  The full list of features to expect is on the SCVMM website.  From the info out there Beta 2 will manage Virtual Server hosts.  Viridian support will come later.

Viridian
Secondly, Viridian is the code name for Windows Server Virtualization, sometimes abbreviated to WSV. Guess what?  I’m just going to call it Viridian
The official release date is a little fuzzy, because Viridian has been announced to ship 180 days after Longhorn.  …Let’s be devils advocate for a moment.  If (assorted IT articles report) Longhorn will ship this year, lets go for broke and say it ships New Years Eve (Dec 31).  Therefore 180 Days after this brings us to June 28 2008.   Which is just over 15 months away (In my worst case scenario) – but this is just conjecture, cause I’ve got no idea when Longhorn is going to ship, and Bob Muglia does say in his keynote “within”.  I guess I can see how people see June and are thinking “End of 2008” — but then it becomes glass half empty/glass half full discussion.

As for getting access to a beta, read the next bit — because you need Longhorn to run Viridian on, I’m guessing we’ll see a beta some time after May 28  :)

Longhorn
Thanks to Patrick over at the Windows Server blog, who posted this as I’m writing this post, Longhorn development is on track. Look for beta 3 within the next 90 days (some time before May 28).  The cool news is Windows PowerShell will be included in Beta 3. Sweet!

Service Pack 1 for Virtual Server 2005 R2
Well it’s been suggested that it should be ready for release soon.  The released whitepapers refer to the “final build”  Fingers crossed?  I do hope it’s before the 31st May because that’s when my beta of SP1 expires :)

Linux Additions
Well the official linux additions page says the additions are on Connect, and although they were updated recently (today) – anything on Connect still has that stigma of it’s beta, unfinished, and unclean for production.   Who knows maybe this will change when SP1 for Virtual Server RTMs?

Management Tools
This I thought was kind of interesting.  I was chatting with a group of level headed guys, and whilst we were talking I heard something to the effect of “Bahhh, Virtual Machines breed like rabbits, I don’t care what they run on, I just want to be able to manage them.”  This made me chuckle, because I’ve often had the same thought :)

Management is big thing for me, so I’m going to keep a close eye on the System Centre Family and see which products extend the functionality within the Microsoft Virtualization space.  For example Bink has posted that DPM 2007 will backup VHDs on the fly for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 with some ability to even backup apps inside the VHD as well.

Part II?
I this promised this post to those people who wanted to start to take some hardy first steps.  I hope it’s helped.  Ok, so it’s taken me 3 days to write this scattered article, and since I started writing, Alessandro, Clive, Bink, Maarten, and a few others have all published some great information you should check out.  Actually there’s been so much material in the past few days, I’m hoping to write a short, sharp post linking to the important resources — called Part II.

Lastly, the Burning Questions
Lastly, do you know how insanely hard it was to get t-shirts in the exact colours Carmine or Viridian.  I mean really, it’s pretty bloody hard!!   So this is my challenge before TechED get’s here this year.  I’m going to express my inner geek and find some shirts with the right colours and get the words Carmine and Viridian screen printed on them.  Wish me luck  :)

New Virtualization whitepapers on Microsoft.com

Posted by admin on March 26th, 2007

Microsoft have 3 new Virtualization whitepapers available for download

The AMD paper interests me the most, it’s 15 papes long and include 2 pages on roadmap for  WSV, AMD and SCVMM.  Which will be a nice [emailable] reference to point people too.  Anyway check them out.

Phew a few moments to myself

Posted by admin on March 23rd, 2007

I’ve just made a fresh cup of coffee and sitting in my comfy chair at home.  So I thought now is a good time to let everyone know what I’ve been up to.

  • Just finished fixing the fuel cap on my bike this morning.  Some rotten sod tried to pry it open.  Chuck if you’re reading this, the good news is it’s all fixed, and I don’t have to get a second key!!
  • While I was tinkering I also got a chance to fix the scottoiler.  It wasn’t really broken, I just wasn’t happy with the way it was performing
  • Other than driving to work this week, I haven’t been on the bike (at all!!!) in nearly a month month now
  • Planning to get out on the bike tomorrow, not sure whether to head towards the coast and visit Hinze Dam or go inland out past Wivenhoe Dam
  • On a side note, I probably spent waaaay to much on duty free scotch back from Seattle.  Oh well damage is done, guess I’ll have to drink it :)
  • If you haven’t heard already the, Australian government is moving to ban incandescent light bulbs.  For a chuckle read this interesting article Banning Incandescent Light Bulbs

Anyway I have to go and play home handyman today, or I won’t be allowed to go out and play tomorrow :)

The Microsoft Management Summit 2007 is next week.

Posted by admin on March 20th, 2007

Historically cool stuff always happens at the summit — you know things like announcing Linux support, or announcing Carmine, just things like that :)

Regardless of the announcements there are always some great sessions that look really interesting.  This year is no different I guess. I’ve checked the session schedule, and a snippet of what I thought was interesting is below:

VIRTUALIZATION
BF12 System Virtualization: How Microsoft enables a complete solution
SV05 Road to an optimized and dynamic Branch - Virtualized Branch Office Servers
SV06 Windows Server Virtualization – Solution Scenarios
 SV07 Virtualization 360
SW30 Move to the Power of x64

SOFTGRID
BF04 Practical uses of Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization
BF07 Application Virtualization: When to virtualize, when to install
SY19 Microsoft SoftGrid and SMS 2003/ConfigMgr: Better Together

I wonder if the session will be made available after the summit finishes?  Keep you posted as I find out more.

MVP Summit Day 1~4

Posted by admin on March 15th, 2007

Whoa, Wow, Whew.  What a week.  It’s all been a blur and my head hurts.  It has been an awesome week.

Although the MVP summit is officially over, I’m using the rest of today and tomorrow to catch up with a few people here in Redmond and say ‘gday’.

So what were the highlights for the week?  Well it’s difficult to say, it’s been a really big week.  The Keynote/QA with Bill Gates certainly changed my perspective on a lot of things.  Then there was also the super uber mega technical deep dives and discussions with he product group too - they pretty much rocked my world.  Then there are so many other things there as well, if I think about it too much harder, it all goes fuzzy again :)

Naturally one of the biggest highlights was to see the other Virtual Machine MVPs in person and meet to face to face.  With such a wealth of knowledge and experience, it was great to “roll-up you sleeves” and get involved in the discussions.

There is so much more I want to post about, but I’ll leave it at that, cause I need to go and grab a coffee and take a breather.

….Now where’s that starbucks?

MVP Summit Day 0

Posted by admin on March 12th, 2007

Twas the night before MVP Summit, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for the SBS lads….

Man, those guys are noisy, loud, uncouth, but a whole lot of fun!! All the SBS community were getting together and I got to catchup with a few of the Aussie SBS MVPs Stu and Dean –  …and how could I forget our very own TabletPC Guy, Hugo was there as well.  Finally got to meet Hugo in person, cool!

Other than that I’m here in Seattle safe and sound.  Went over to the convention centre to check it out, and there is a HUGE poster weloming MVPs, a nice tough, and I’ll post a photo soon.  I’m a little jetlagged and rough around the edges, but all is good.  I haven’t slept much in the last 30 hours and it’s nearly 10:00 pm local time, so I’m off to get some beauty sleep.
