I know the heading sounds a ‘tabloid-ish’ but this is amazing — Ben Rudolph’s post over at the Parallels Virtualization Blog really makes you stop and smile at the everyday uses of virtualization:
Eric has type I diabetes, and uses an insulin pump to control his condition. As with many medical devices, the software that powers it is Windows-only. Eric has a Mac. Rather than buy a new computer, Eric uses Windows XP in Parallels Desktop [and the inbuilt USB to serial support] to keep his insulin pump running, and keep himself healthy.
Hear him talk about it in his own words on youtube. He explains it much better than me:
Words fail me - Wow.

Last week it was announced at the Citrix Summit in Orlando that we (as in Clariti) are the Best APAC Solution Partner of the year - how cool is that?!
Well Ok, I may be biased but I think its way cool. APAC covers Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Greater China, Singapore, India, PNG, Australia, and New Zealand. Close to 700 Citrix partners, and US$100M in sales — and we won!
We’re also hiring (actually we’re always looking for great people) for:
- Pre-Sales, Technical Architects
- Team Leaders
- Technical Account Managers
- Level 1 Help Desk
- High End Senior Citrix Specialists
If any of these roles fulfil your secret burning desire to change the world — and you live or want to live in sunny Brisbane, send my Manager, Matthew Chilcott an e-mail for more information.
PS: Last year there was no iForum and hence no shiny award, be we also won “Trusted Advisor of the year” in 2005, and aiming to win it again in 2007 :)
PPS: If you want to know more about Clariti or our awesome coffee machine, feel free to drop me an e-mail or give me a call.

Parky just sent me a link to some more Virtual Machines on Microsoft Downloads, including the new SSL VPN / Internet Access Gateway 2007.
I haven’t had a chance to download and test them, but you can find them here: Forefront Edge Security and Access Demonstration Toolkit, and a sippet is below:
Overview
The 9 non-persistent virtual machines in this toolkit which provides the following 4 scenario-based demonstrations.
Secure Remote Access with IAG 2007
This scenario shows Intelligent Application Gateway 2007 working with Exchange Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and optionally Dynamics CRM 3.0 (see Additional Information), being accessed via both a managed and an unmanaged client. The following features of IAG 2007 will be highlighted:
• SSL VPN
• Policy-based Secure Access
• End-point Security Management
Secure Remote Access with ISA Server 2006
This scenario shows ISA Server 2006 working with Antigen for Exchange, Antigen for SharePoint and Windows Rights Management Services to provide comprehensive protection for Exchange Server and Windows SharePoint Services. The following features of ISA Server 2006 highlighted:
• HTML Form Authentication
• Single Sign-On
• SSL Bridging
Branch Office Security with ISA Server 2006
This scenario shows ISA Server 2006 working with Windows Server 2003 R2 to connect, secure and optimize bandwidth between branch offices. The following features of ISA Server 2006 and Windows Server 2003 R2 will be highlighted:
• HTTP Compression (ISA)
• BITS Caching (ISA)
• DiffServ Tagging (ISA)
• Distributed File System Replication (R2)
• Remote Differential Compression (R2)
Internet Access Protection with ISA Server 2006
This scenario shows ISA Server 2006 being used for network edge protection against internal and externally originating threats. The following features of ISA Server 2006 will be highlighted:
• Application-Layer Inspection
• Flood Resiliency

The “USB key story” just gets more stupid everyday. They get smaller, they get cheaper, they get faster. ….and sold out.
Last month I bought a Sony 1Gb Microvault and love it. It’s so small I keep it in my wallet, and it’s proven invaluable. I love it so much I went back to buy two more (another one for me, and one for Parky). Alas, at $36 there was only one left — Parky got it. Just to give you an idea how small the USB key is, here is a piccy on 10mm graded paper:

It’s umm the one in the middle. You just plug it into your USB port, and it works. See I told you it was small!

I’m getting reading for a webcast, so I’ll blog this quickly — Jeff over at the Coding Horror has blogged how to extend the Vista Grace period.
All the details are in his post “Extending The Windows Vista Grace Period to 120 Days” and a snippet is below:
If you’re on the fence about the impending release of Windows Vista, I recommend trying before you buy. Every Vista DVD includes the ability to install any edition of Vista without a product key. When you install without a product key, you get an automatic 30 day evaluation period.* This probably isn’t news to anyone.
What may be news to you, however, is that you can easily extend the 30-day Windows Vista grace period to 120 days. No hacks required. This is an official, supported operation directly from Microsoft.
To extend the grace period another 30 days, simply start a command prompt as Administrator, and issue this command:
slmgr -rearm Reboot for the change to take effect, and voila, you have 30 more days
* Note that this does not apply to the Enterprise edition of Vista, which only allows a 3 day grace period. The enterprise edition has an entirely different activation scheme; it uses a local volume license key server.
